Janko Tipsarevic had to dig deep to keep Serbian hopes alive in Prague as he outlasted Radek Stepanek to win an epic 5 hour battle 57 64 64 46 97 after Tomas Berdych had earlier put the home nation ahead.
Having led by a break in the first set Tipsarevic was then stunned by a Stepanek fightback but put the dissapointment behind him to win the next two sets and put himself on the brink of victory. This will be the 11th meeting between Czech Republic and Serbia with both sides having won five of the previous ties although all but the most recent of these were played under the flags of Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia. The last meeting, a semifinal in 2010, went right to the wire with Novak Djokovic and Janko Tipsarevic pulling Serbia back from a 2-1 deficit on the final day.
World No. 4 Andy Murray held off No. 9 seed Janko 4-6, 6-3 6-4 to reach the semi-finals of the Sony Ericsson Open on Wednesday.
No. 9 seed Janko battled his way into the Miami Masters quarter-finals for the first time in four years with a 7-6(3), 6-2 victory over Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov on Tuesday. No. 9 seed Janko maintained his run of form on Sunday when he knocked out Ukraine’s Alexadr Dolgopolov 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 in the third round of the Sony Ericsson Open. The pair’s first meeting lasted two hours and 6 minutes.
