Winning 92 per cent of first serves and being solid on return, Nishikori broke Janko in the second and eighth games of the first set to take it 6-2 in 34 minutes. The turning point of the second set came in the third game when Jankela broke his opponent for a 2-1 lead after a long deuce game. The Japanese became rattled and erratic on his shots; he committed a total of 25 errors in the set. Leading 4-2, Janko snatched another break to go 5-2 up before serving out the set. After trading wins in the first two games of the decider, Jankela broke Nishikori’s serve and it seemed the match was slipping away from the Japanese. But Nishikori replied strongly, breaking back in the next game to go level at 2-2. From that point on, the match turned into a dogfight.
